Cardiorespiratory Rehabilitation

About the service

If you have a heart or lung condition, your doctor may recommend a cardiac or pulmonary rehabilitation programme to support your recovery and long-term health.

Pulmonary Rehabilitation

Pulmonary rehabilitation is an 8-week structured programme based on the Australian and New Zealand Pulmonary Rehabilitation Guidelines. It is designed to help people with lung conditions improve their breathing, strength, and overall quality of life.

The programme includes:

  • Supervised exercise to improve fitness and reduce breathlessness
  • Education and support to help manage symptoms and understand your condition
  • Lifestyle guidance, including smoking cessation and healthy living strategies

Pulmonary rehabilitation can benefit people with:

  • Chronic respiratory conditions (e.g. COPD, asthma, bronchiectasis, pulmonary fibrosis, cystic fibrosis, lung cancer)
  • Those recovering from lung surgery
  • People at risk of respiratory complications

Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is also an 8-week structured programme, based on the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand and the National Heart Foundation of Australia guidelines. It helps people with heart conditions recover safely and strengthen their cardiovascular health.

The programme focuses on:

  • Safe, progressive exercise to improve heart and muscle strength
  • Education and support for lifestyle changes, such as healthy eating and stress management
  • Reducing the risk of future heart problems

Cardiac rehabilitation is recommended for people who are:

  • Recovering from heart surgery, heart attack, or cardiac arrest
  • Living with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes
