Assessment

Your physiotherapy assessment

The first step in creating a treatment plan tailored to your specific needs. Your physiotherapist takes the time to understand your physical health, current symptoms, and personal goals for recovery or improvement.

Your assessment is the foundation of everything that follows. By understanding your history, your symptoms and what you want to achieve, we can build a personalised plan that supports your recovery, improves how you function day to day, and enhances your overall wellbeing.

What the assessment includes

01
A discussion about you

Your medical history, daily activities, and any current concerns — so we understand your current health status.

02
Observation & movement tests

Understanding how your heart, lungs and body are functioning and moving, and where it is limited.

03
Specific physical checks

Targeted tests based on your individual condition to pinpoint areas of limitation or weakness.

Tailored to your condition

Depending on your needs, your physiotherapist may focus on different areas of your health.

Cardiorespiratory

Breathing patterns, oxygen levels, chest movement, airway clearance and exercise tolerance.

Movement & strength

Joint movement, muscle strength, posture, pain and overall movement quality.

Neurological

Coordination, balance, sensation and motor control.

These assessments help identify any areas of limitation or weakness so a personalised treatment plan can be developed to support your recovery, improve function, and enhance your overall wellbeing.

Who it's for

An initial assessment suits anyone living with a heart or lung condition, recovering from surgery or a hospital admission, or noticing that breathlessness, fatigue or reduced fitness is changing what they can do in a day. You do not need a referral, and you do not need a diagnosis — if you are unsure whether physiotherapy is the right thing for you, the assessment is where that question gets answered honestly.

Children are welcome, and so are people whose main concern is confidence rather than a specific symptom.

Assessments take place at our Rockhampton clinic, in Tobruk House on Archer Street.

What happens after your assessment

You leave with a plan, not just findings. Before the appointment ends your physiotherapist will talk through what they found, what is driving your symptoms and what can realistically change — then set out the next step, whether that is a course of treatment here, a home programme to get on with yourself, or a referral back to your GP if physiotherapy is not what you need.

People who go on to treatment are usually seen weekly or fortnightly at first, and a course commonly runs six to twelve appointments before a formal review. That is a starting estimate rather than a commitment: the plan is written for you and revised as you progress.

Where it is useful, and with your consent, we write to your GP or specialist so everyone involved in your care is working from the same picture. Fees for the initial consultation and for follow-up appointments are published in full on our fee schedule.
